Microsoft finally reveals the secrets of the mysterious HPU chip of Hololens

Microsoft Hololens

When a few months ago we told you what were some of the main components that Microsoft had used for their Hololens, we were left to unveil its mysterious graphics processor. He Redmond have referred only as holographic process or Unit HPU (Holographic Processing Unit).

However, Microsoft has used the annual Hot Chips conference in Cupertino, California, to finally reveal the secrets of his HPU processor. As has collected The Register, is u n processor 24 cores of 28 nm designed by TSMC, which is responsible for making their calculations for augmented reality 200 times faster than you would your Intel processor 14 nm.

This is the brain of the Hololens

The main processor HPU is manufactured by TSMC technology of 28 nanometers, and equips 65 million logic gates, 8 MB of SDRAM, an additional 1 GB of RAM DDR3 and includes PCIe interfaces and standard serial, all with a consumption less than 10W.

The chip also equips 24 digital signal processors or DPS signed by Tensilica, which are responsible for the digital processing of external signals. To accelerate this process of creating augmented reality, they have also added 10 custom instructions, which together, as stated in The Register, this HPU should be able to perform a trillion calculations per second.

This finally revealed by Microsoft processor will be responsible for analyzing the environment that record the camera device, and process these signals with movements and gestures of users as well as internal data needed to calculate and process augmented reality or we’ll see when we mixed the put.

As we said in May, this feature must be added the Intel Atom Z8100 processor x5-bit to 64 1,04GHZ , which is based in Airmont architecture with 14nm technology, a battery of 16.5 Wh, a pair of gigas of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage, of which 54 are free to users. Its battery is 16.5 Wh, and will include two cameras 2.4 and 1.1 megapixels, one for photos and one for video recording at 30 frames per second.

Although Hololens have not yet come on the market, Microsoft began selling in February its developer kit priced at $3000. It remains to know the date when it come to other consumers and their final price will be then when we know how far they have managed to take advantage of its internal hardware, and how facing Microsoft its attack on augmented and mixed reality while the rest companies seem focused on using the virtual.
