Apple presents the new iPad Pro with power and functionality

iPad Pro

Among the various features, the new iPad Pro includes ultra-wide-angle, professional-quality microphones and a revolutionary LiDAR scanner that offers advanced depth detection functions, to support even more professional workflows as well as professional-level photography and video apps.

The new device arrives with iPadOS 13.4, enabling support for trackpads on iPad, in a completely redesigned formula to match the iPad’s own features and to offer customers a completely new way of interacting with their device.

When the user moves his finger on the trackpad surface, the pointer transforms elegantly to highlight the elements of the interface. And with the Multi-Touch gestures on the trackpad it is possible to navigate the entire operating system quickly and easily without the user ever having to raise his hand from the surface.

Pro performance for the new iPad with the A12Z Bionic chip

Designed for the most demanding workflows, such as editing 4K videos or designing 3D models, iPad Pro takes another leap forward in terms of performance with the new A12Z Bionic chip. Thanks to the 8-core GPU of the A12Z Bionic chip, improved thermal architecture and optimized performance controllers, iPad Pro guarantees the highest performance ever on an iPad.

In combination with the 8-core CPU and the powerful Neural Engine, which makes a new generation of apps possible, this chip is the only one capable of offering the incredible performances contained in the slim and light design of the iPad Pro. Not only that: with a battery that lasts up to 10 hours, faster Wi-Fi connections, and 60% faster Gigabit-class LTE technology and with support for even more bands, customers can keep working and creating all day.

The iPad Pro display

The edge-to-edge Liquid Retina display, in 11″ and 12.9″ formats, is the most advanced mobile display in the world. Thanks to the wide P3 color range, photos and videos have a more brilliant, detailed and realistic rendering, and so too do apps and games. ProMotion technology automatically adjusts the display’s refresh rate up to 120Hz, so everything is smooth and responsive. And no matter where users take their iPad Pro or how they choose to interact with it: the high brightness display with True Tone and anti-reflective coating always offers the best possible vision, more than any other mobile device.

Professional cameras

iPad Pro has a professional photographic system consisting of a 12MP wide-angle camera for taking beautiful photos and recording 4K videos, and a 10MP camera with ultra-wide angle and 2x zoom for a much wider field of view. Adding a second camera doubles your photographic and video capabilities, allowing you to explore new perspectives and multi-camera approaches – a revolution for creative professionals.

Professional quality audio and microphones

Now iPad Pro has five professional-quality microphones that capture ultra-sharp sound down to the smallest details. It also features four speakers that automatically adjust to the orientation of the device to offer an extraordinarily immersive listening experience. Professional cameras and audio together with the large display transform iPad Pro into a versatile mobile studio for creative professionals who deal with films, videos, podcasts, content creation and more.

Revolutionary LiDAR scanner

The revolutionary LiDAR scanner offers previously unthinkable capabilities for a mobile device. The LiDAR scanner, which works both indoors and outdoors, measures the distance from surrounding objects up to 5 meters by taking a photon level and speed reading in the order of nanoseconds. The new depth frameworks in iPadOS combine the depth points measured by the LiDAR scanner with the data sent by the two cameras and the motion sensors, also taking advantage of the computer vision algorithms on the A12Z Bionic chip to more accurately detect the details of the scene. The tight integration between these elements makes possible a new class of AR experiences on iPad Pro.

All existing ARKit apps can automatically count on the instant positioning of AR objects and on an improved system for scanning movements and occlusion between people and virtual objects. Using the latest ARKit update with a new Scene Geometry API, developers can harness the power in the new LiDAR scanner to explore previously unthinkable scenarios.

The LiDAR scanner improves the Metro app: automatically calculating a person’s height is even easier and faster, and the useful vertical and lateral guides that appear automatically allow fast and accurate measurements. The Metro app now also includes a Ruler view for the most minute measurements, and allows users to save a list of all measurements with related screenshots for future use.

Trackpad support coming to iPadOS

With iPadOS 13.4, it will be possible for the first time to use a trackpad to interact with iPad: this possibility allows you to write in a more natural way and offers greater precision in selecting text and working with spreadsheets and professional apps. Specifically designed to integrate with the iPad touch interface, the cursor presents itself with a circle that highlights the apps on the Home screen and in the Dock, the interface elements and the text fields, clearly indicating the elements on which the user can click.

In addition, you can use simple gestures on the trackpad to switch between apps, open the app switcher or view the Dock, Control Center and apps in Slide Over.

Trackpad support in iPadOS works great with the apps customers use every day. Browsing the web pages in Safari or taking photos in the Photos library, accurately editing text in Notes and organizing messages in Mail on iPad will be even easier and more convenient. Most third-party apps will work without modification, but developers can take advantage of the new APIs to go even further and create increasingly unique experiences.

Updates arriving in the Apple iWork productivity suite – Pages, Numbers and Keynote – take full advantage of the trackpad and allow a whole new way to work with documents on iPad. Writing and editing text is a breeze in Pages, working with multiple objects in Keynote is easier than ever, and the added levels of precision make working with larger spreadsheets a breeze. Other new features include great new templates in Pages and Keynote, which give users an edge in creating beautiful documents and, for the first time in iWork, users can add a ‘drop cap’ to make a paragraph stand out with a first letter large and decorative.

Magic Keyboard and other pro accessories

Together with the second generation Apple Pencil and an updated version of the Smart Keyboard Folio, today there is also the new Magic Keyboard. It magnetically attaches to iPad Pro highlighting the beautiful Multi-Touch display, and has a free tilt design that allows you to always find the right angle, even when holding the device on your lap. An exclusive adjustment system allows you to adjust the viewing angle up to 130 degrees. In its compact and protective design, the Magic Keyboard contains a standard-size backlit keyboard with keys equipped with a scissor mechanism and 1 mm excursion: writing on iPad has never been so comfortable.

The Magic Keyboard has a USB-C port for pass-through charging that allows you to charge the iPad Pro without occupying the USB-C on the device, which remains free to connect accessories such as disks and external monitors. The trackpad of the Magic Keyboard, with a surface that allows you to click anywhere, completes the iPad touch interface by simplifying navigation and allowing you to work with great precision: in this way, iPad Pro becomes an even more versatile and productive tool.

“The new iPad Pro features advanced technologies never seen before on a mobile device,” explains Phil Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide marketing. “It has the most advanced mobile display ever, extraordinary performance, pro level cameras and audio, the revolutionary LiDAR scanner and the new Magic Keyboard with trackpad. Again, iPad is a huge step forward. There is no other device in the world like the new iPad Pro and we are convinced that our customers will fall in love with it.”

“With the introduction of trackpad support in iPadOS, we are making the iPad Pro even more powerful and versatile,” says Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of software engineering. “We have reflected a lot on how to integrate the use of a trackpad into a purely touch interface while maintaining the characteristics that customers already know and love. We are excited to be able to present this new way of interacting with iPad to the millions of people who use iPadOS today.”
