Looking After Your Back Long Term

Back pain is one of the biggest complaints in the UK, and not only is it debilitating, but it is a long-term illness – so in the long run can lead to unemployment due to ongoing poor health. Looking after your back is so important – if you treat it well when you are younger, it will repay you when you are older. But what are the top causes of back pain and how can you prevent long term back problems?

Exercise is one of the best things you can do, not only for your back but for your health overall. If there is one thing you make sure you do, exercise is it! Good exercises for the back are gentle, posture exercises like yoga and pilates, and swimming. Even going out for a half an hour walk today is great for your back – just make sure that you are not carrying anything like a large bag which might put extra strain on your back!

This brings us on to carrying and lifting – So many people have back problems due to carrying bags incorrectly or lifting heavy objects. For a start NEVER lift something that you think is too heavy. If you think it is too heavy it almost definitely is, so don’t do it! Heavy bags have been a big problem the last few years also – the trend for oversized handbags favoured by celebrity fashionistas, has filtered onto the high street and women overfilling these large bags have started to suffer from back pain. If you must carry a large handbag, please try not to overfill it, but ideally a rucksack is better – and you can get some very pretty ones to suit all styles and budgets.

Office work is another modern day back pain causer – If you are spending all day sitting at a desk, make sure that you have the correct chair, with good lower back support, that is ideally adjustable. Make sure that you are sitting with your eyes level with the top of the monitor, and feet flat on the floor – use a monitor stand or footrest if necessary. This is equally important if you work from home and have a home office. It is also good to make sure that you have enough space around you so that you have room to breathe. If working from home and looking to move house, it is important to make sure that there is a room put aside for this, so if you are looking to move and are looking for a Home Buyers Survey Oxford company then why not consider companies such as Sam Conveyancing.

Of course, it always helps to speak to a professional. If you are having problems with back pain, make an appointment to see your doctor, or an osteopath.
