5 Factors to Consider Before You Buy a New Smartphone

As technology becomes smaller and processing power becomes more advanced, mobile devices like smartphones are becoming increasingly popular around the world. However, when it comes to smartphones, all of the options afforded by things like processing power, memory, apps, aesthetics, and even battery power can make selecting the device that is right for you a complicated nightmare.

The following is a list of 5 factors to consider before purchasing a new smartphone, and should hopefully make the selection process both fun and easy.

1. Operating System

Commonly referred to as the OS, the operating system used by the smartphone you select will be a crucial component to your everyday life. Popular OS’s include Android, iOS, Microsoft, and Blackberry among others. Whichever one you decide to choose, it would be a good idea to check in with your local smartphone retailer and test a few OS’s out to see which one feels right for you.

2. Screen Size

The visual experience of using a smartphone is one of the definitive reasons why they are so culturally popular (we do live in a visual culture, after all). In terms of expense, screens are right at the top of the list–as anyone who has ever broken their screen has discovered, replacing a screen is expensive!

Some factors that come into play when selecting the proper screen are size, resolution, viewing angles, and coating. Each will play a key role in the comfort level your smartphone affords.

3. Storage Space

The typical amount of storage offered by most smartphone manufacturers is 16 GB. For most consumers, this is enough space to store the essentials (pictures, songs, videos, etc). But for some, this space is barely enough for what they need. Additionally, some smartphone manufacturers (not Apple, mind you) offer the capability of storage expansion via memory slot.

4. Apps

Apps literally put the “smart” in smartphone. Apps are very similar to software in our PCs in that they are essentially programs designed by a third party to function within a larger OS. The compatibility of specific popular apps with the OS is crucial, not only for practical functionality but for maintaining a vibrant social life. The more apps that are available in a specific OS, the more customized the user-experience will be.

5. Camera Specifications

Nearly every smartphone comes equipped with a built-in camera. Whether consciously or not, cameras are a major feature that most users take into account when purchasing a smartphone (we live in a visual culture, remember?). In terms of technological development, the camera is an area that has seen some of the most rapid change.

In terms of price, the higher the amount of megapixels, the more expensive the camera. So if you are one of the users who doesn’t find the camera to be tat important, you could certainly choose a model with a lower MP amount.

After you have purchased your smartphone, the next step is to accessorize. Purchasing a cool phone case and checking into mobile broadband options is a great way to improve your quality of life.
